The center-to-center spacing of the wires are used to specify welded items with holes of 1" or greater. The wire will be spaced 2" on center in square welded wire mesh made using. 250 wire, resulting in a 1-3/4" clear hole.
The type of ss welded mesh SS-304 is most popular, but types 302, 309, 310, 316, 316L, 321 & 347 are also useful.

The Basics of Welded Wire Mesh
Welded wire mesh is created by joining two orthogonal wires at their intersections using a resistance welding procedure to form a grid. A pattern board is used to route the grid's line wires through the welder. Crosswires are dropped into place and fused together by the machine to create the two distinct planes that make up welded wire mesh.
